چکیده

On the basis of the two-site polaron problem, which we solve by exact di-agonalization, we analyse the spectral properties of polaronic systems in view of discerning localized from itinerant polarons and bound polaron pairs from an ensemble of single polarons. The corresponding experimental techniques for that concern photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. The evolution of the density of states as a function of concentration of charge carriers and strength of the electron-phonon interaction clearly shows the opening up of a gap between single polaronic and bi-polaronic states, in analogy to the Hubbard problem for strongly correlated electron systems. In studying the details of the intricately linked dynamics of the charge carriers and of the molecular deformations which surround them, we find that in general the dy-namical delocalization of the charge carriers helps to strengthen the phase coherence for itinerant polaronic states, except for the crossover regime between adiabatic and anti-adiabatic small polarons. The crossover between these two regimes is triggered by two characteristic time scales: the renormalized electron hopping rate and the renormalized vibrational frequency becoming equal. This crossover regime is then characterized by temporarily alternating self-1 localization and delocalization of the charge carriers which is accompanied by phase slips in the charge and molecular deformation oscillations and ultimately leads to a dephasing between these two dynamical components of the polaron problem. We visualize these features by a study of the temporal evolution of the charge redistribution and the change in molecular deformations. The spectral and dynamical properties of polarons discussed here are beyond the applicability of the standard Lang Firsov approach to the polaron problem.

The Charge Ordered State from Weak to Strong Coupling

We apply the Dynamical Mean Field Theory to the problem of charge ordering. In the normal state as well as in the Charge Ordered (CO) state the existence of polarons, i.e. electrons strongly coupled to local lattice deformation, is associated to the qualitative properties of the Lattice Polarization Distribution Function (LPDF). At intermediate and strong coupling a CO state characterized by a ...

Phase diagram of the Holstein polaron in one dimension

The behavior of the 1D Holstein polaron is described, with emphasis on lattice coarsening effects, by distinguishing between adiabatic and nonadiabatic contributions to the local correlations and dispersion properties. The original and unifying systematization of the crossovers between the different polaron behaviors, usually considered in the literature, is obtained in terms of quantum to clas...

Effects of e-e interactions on the dynamics of polarons in conjugated polymers

Combining the one-dimensional tight-binding Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the extended Hubbard model (EHM), we investigate the effect of electron-electron interactions on the dynamics of a charged polaron in a conjugated polymer chain, by using a nonadiabatic dynamical method. Both the localization and the velocity of the polaron will vary with the on-site Coulomb interactions U and the ...

Polarons and bipolarons in strongly interacting electron-phonon systems.

The Holstein Hubbard and Holstein t–J models are studied for a wide range of phonon frequencies, electron–electron and electron–phonon interaction strengths on finite lattices with up to ten sites by means of direct Lanczos diagonalization. Previously the necessary truncation of the phononic Hilbert space caused serious limitations to either very small systems (four or even two sites) or to wea...
